What I've done |
In my time, I've done many things - soldier (29 years); criminal justice planner (4 years); auditor 18 years); evaluator (20 years); museum manager (9 years); consultant (11 years); educator (all my life). Simple arithmetic will tell you tht some of these were, as we say in the criminal justice biz, "concurrent sentences"! In each of my careers, I have also been very active in professional associations. All through those years I have also been a volunteer - in the Canadian Army (where we are ALL volunteers), Thompson (Manitoba) Lions Club; St. John Ambulance (Federal District), The Guards Club of Ottawa, Kanata Minor Hockey Association, Ontario Hockey Trainer Certification Program; three branches of the Royal Canadian Legion; the Canadian Battlefields Foundation; the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation; the Upper Canada Historical Association; and, more recently, the Fort La Présentation Association (Ogdensburg, New York), and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (Eastern Ontario)...and there have been others that don't come to mind at the moment. One of my new hobbies is family history, as you will see on a later page. And then there are all the hobbies - photography, woodworking, camping, gardening, and, in the past, skiing, hiking, fishing and a little hunting and rugger. I also collect things - beer mugs, antique tools, especially planes (though these have now been given to the Perth Museum in Perth ON); music (almost 1300 CDs and DVDs); films - several hundred films, including many classics, even silent films! Then there are the books - several thousand of them, and most of them on history. History has always been my passion, particularly military history. Most recently, I have concentrated on the English Civil War, the American Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars (including the War of 1812-14) and the Crimean War. There are times when I envy specialists like my brother-in-law John Berry, who enjoys international acclaim in his field (crosscultural psychology), but I must say that, looking back on all the years of different jobs, I have had great fun and have still made my small contributions to the betterment of others. |
