The Garden in April
By the end of March, the snow has generally disappeared and the first flowers appear in a raised bed under the kitchen and dining room windows, which receives full sun. Hyacinths bloom first, followed by tulips and pasque flowers (pulsatilla).

The Garden in September
Most of our perennials bloom between April and August, but there are still spots of colour around the garden in September. However, an early frost can kill them all in a single night.

The Garden in October
By October, usually only the last flowers on the perennial sunflowers are in bloom. However, 2005 was a very exceptional year. These photos were all taken on October 2, 2005, when the temperature on the deck was 32C or 90+F. This is unheard of in this area. Just look at the roses!

The Great Front of House Project of 2009
For 25 years, my son Derek has been telling me we should move the front walk of the house to a protected location under the overhang of the roof. For 10 and more, Sue has been saying the same thing. Two years ago, we replaced a major retaining wall around the pool. In 2008, we laid ceramic tile in much of the basement, redecorated the area. and installed an "airtight" furnace in the fireplace, which has been wonderful in its first winter, and on which we could even cook in the event of a power failure! Today, May 21, 2009, we completed our latest renovation project.
