Shortly after the bicoloured tulips, the pasque flowers shoot up from the earth and rapidly begin to bloom.

The Pasque flower is the first perennial that is not a bulb to bloom in our garden. It will stay in bloom until all the other spring flowers have finished blooming. They are remarkable little plants.

I have never had any luck growing poppies. I tried one last time in the spring of 2005, choosing a bed with lots of sun, good drainage and very poor soil. Guess what popped up this spring, looking VERY healthy?

However, two thirds of the way through April, mot of the perennial beds look like this - lots of things popping up but not much colour other than green.

The gooseberry and currant bushs are just beginning to break into leaf and there are only buds on the roses.

Aha! The first usable herb of the year! This is a unique variety of sorrel which never "bolts" to seed, even on the hottest days of summer.

...and the several varieties of creeping thyme on the patiop are alive and well and sending out their shoots which will eventually cover the entire surface. Note the little clumps of garlic chives, which we are forever weeding out of all areas of the garden.
