Sunflowers. By September, most of the blooms have faded, the seeds are mature, and are harvested by the goldfinches.

Perennial sunflowers. These plants, growing two metres in height, are covered along the length of each stem with small flowers which bloom until very heavy frost kills everything in the garden in late September or October.
