Highlight for Album: Perth and Fremantle
Album: Perth and Fremantle

Almost all my time in Perth was taken up at the conference and visiting other museums. Most of the photos in this album are in the immediate vicinity of the home of Greg Wallace, my host and old mate!

Highlight for Album: The Western Australian Museum
Album: The Western Australian Museum

The W.A. Museum is one of Australia's great museums. Its buildings are old and rather nondescript, but it has fascinating exhibits and a dedicated staff. One of its greatest strengths is its very strong support to smaller museums throughout this huge state, including locations as isolated as Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. For years, my pal Greg Wallace and his dedicated team of Val and Claire-Frances (C-F) did an absolutely bonzer job helping their colleagues across the state - and now, as a consultant, Greg is still doing it, but hopefully for better pay!

Highlight for Album: Western Australia Army Museum
Album: Western Australia Army Museum

The Western Australia Army Museum, located in a former barracks on the highest point in Fremantle, just south of Perth, is not a huge museum but has an excellent collection, very specifically dedicated to Western Australia's military history. Like other military museums around the world, its knowledgeable and dedicated volunteers are pearls beyond price.

Album: Western Australia Maritime Museum

In 2003, the Western Australia Maritime Museum had just opened its dramatic new building on the Fremantle waterfront. Excellent displays, superb signage and a very fine pub not far away.

Highlight for Album: New Norcia
Album: New Norcia

Who would have expected to find a Spanish Benedictine monastery in the middle of the Western Australian bush? New Norcia is famous for its production of wine and baked goods and formerly for its aboriginal education and music programs, including their nationally famous Aboriginal boys brass band. Like Tintern Abbey in South Wales, it is a place of wonderful peace.

Highlight for Album: York
Album: York

York is the largest town in the Avon Valley and has always functioned as its administrative centre. The old Residency and the combined courthouse and gaol are extremely interesting museums of local history.

Highlight for Album: The Shire of Toodyay
Album: The Shire of Toodyay

Toodyay is the second the the Avon Valley's large towns. You will find LOTS of photos in this album, as I was doing a project for the Shire that focussed on the interpretation of the Connor Mill and related historic properties.
