Le fort Carillon/Fort Ticonderoga
Once you have stopped at the gift shop and paid your considerable admission, you enter the fort. The first thing visible, which spoils the historic atmosphere, is this line of signs, Not a good idea.

Each sign has a fair whack of text and they go on - and on - and on. Small wonder only some of the visitors glance at the first and virtually none even look at the rest.

Passing the wasted signage, one is impressed by the amount of stone in the construction - and the way it is use. A pity that visitor safety requires the use of the metal railings but it is unavoidable and not all that intrusive.

The number of guns and their proper positioning is impressive - so very much better than at a certain gift shop thinly disguised as a "fort" not that many miles to the south.

The fort is near the end of a peninsula and is high above the lake. It is positioned to defend primarily against an attack from the south as it was originally a French fort. The slopes are rugged and wooded but were likely less so when the fort was in use.
