Reaching the south shore of the St. Lawrence, we turn left to follow the shore. The mountains that approach the south shore at this point and form the backbone of the Gaspé are an extension of the Appalachian Mountains of the eastern USA. These are fold mountains - but that cone up ahead looks much more like a volcnic plug, similar, if much smaller, to those southeast of Montréal.

Once past this curious hill, the south shore is quite flat, with mostly shallow water along the shore. It is also tidal. When I was a boy, this shoreline was dotted by eel traps, extending hundreds of feet out into the shallow water. Sadly, all the eels are gone...and so are the traps.
